Overview

James DeRoos joined Ubi Cras Stop Loss (UC//SL) as Team Lead Senior Underwriter, bringing nearly a decade of medical stop-loss underwriting experience from Crumdale Specialty. His background spans risk from 50-life groups to placements covering several thousand lives, giving him a working command of underwriting mechanics at every stage of the book.​

At Crumdale Specialty, James progressed from Junior Underwriter (2019) to Associate Underwriter (2021) to Team Lead Senior Underwriter (2024), ultimately leading a team of ten underwriters within the medical stop-loss department he helped build from the ground up. He trained new hires on underwriting process and procedure, and is proficient in reading and analyzing self-funding reports — including aggregate, 25% specific, trigger, pre-certification, pending, denied, case management notes, and summary of benefits — to support disciplined risk decisions.​

Before Crumdale, James spent four years as an Underwriting Assistant at Excess Reinsurance Underwriters, Inc., supporting a five-person underwriting team that produced more than $200 million in stop-loss premium. He directly supported the senior underwriter from 2017 onward, processed policy issuance, and organized and analyzed stop-loss reporting across traditional aggregate and specific, captive, level-funded, MEC, and MVP structures.​

James holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance from Temple University's Fox School of Business (2015), with earlier coursework at Harrisburg Area Community College. He gained early professional exposure through a business professional internship at Corporate Synergies, supporting client benchmarking projects and compliance research.​

James brings a proven track record of building underwriting discipline into a growing book of business — training, organizing, and leading teams through the day-to-day execution that keeps medical stop-loss underwriting running smoothly — to his new role at UC//SL.​
